Symptoms of imbalanced vata dosha
Indications or signs of vata dosha imbalance are listed below. Vata can be imbalanced both ways, it get either increased or decreased.
General indications

- Thinness
- Blackish coloration or pigmentation of skin
- Loving for hot substances, hot weather
- Tremors
- Flatulence

Factors increasing / causing imbalance of vata dosha
Vata gets imbalanced or vitiated due to factors listed below
- Artificial food
- Life style
- Age
- Environmental factors i.e. day and night, wind, cold or dry weather
- Season
- Caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol
- Irregular meals – Having meals at different times every day, eating before proper digestion of food eaten before.
- Irregular routine – sleeping late night, get up late in the morning,
- Controlling natural urges (urination, excretion, thirst, hunger etc.)
- Consuming wrong food – too spicy, bitter, dry foods, cold foods, raw food in excessive quantity

How to balance vata dosha?
Do’s
We have already seen factors responsible for vata imbalance. Main medication to vata imbalance is just to avoid those.
- Daily routine – It should be regular. One should care about meal and sleep timings. Sufficient sleep is necessary for vata balance.
- Food – Avoid unfavorable food items, those increasing vata dosha. Have cooked, warm, slight oily food. Acceptable food tastes are sweet, salty and sour.
- Weather – Try to maintain warmth in cold weather.
- Ayurvedic massage – abhyanga or massage with ayurvedic taila (sesame oil) is very useful.
- Regular and light exercise
Don’ts
- Irregular routine
- Less, disturbed sleep
- Food –Intake of food increasing vata dosha. Consume raw foods in lesser amount. Avoid bitter, pungent, dry and cold foods.
- Weather – Avoid cold weather, strong winds
- Heavy, excessive exercise
- Smoking, alcohol consumption
